Malpaís de Güímar

The Malpaís de Güímar Special Nature Reserve is a natural area situated in the municipality of Güímar. The almost desert-like landscape combines the black colour of solidified lava with reddish sand, giving visitors the impression that they are on another planet. A coastal walk that keeps you enjoying yourself for the entire duration of the walk.

This protected landscape covers around 3 square kilometres, stretching from the Montaña Grande volcanic cone to the sea, and is notable for its lava flows and cardonal-tabaibal formations. Several trails of low to moderate difficulty start from El Puertito de Güímar, allowing visitors to explore the area. The walk takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the route chosen.

This reserve takes its name from the Montaña Grande volcanic cone, which stands at 276 metres; its crater is approximately 300 metres in diameter and 50 metres deep, and has a distinctive asymmetrical profile due to the prevailing wind at the time of the eruption, which caused the material to be deposited mainly on the leeward side.

Despite the dry conditions, high salinity, intense sunshine and strong winds, the reserve is home to a remarkable diversity of plant life adapted to this hostile environment. Amongst the cardon cacti and bitter tabaiba, one can find species such as the ‘leña buena’, the ‘tasaigo’ and the ‘cornical’. Along the coastline, the influence of the sea favours the growth of sea lettuce and everlasting, whilst in the sandy areas a pseudo-steppe grassland community thrives, comprising species such as cerrillos, panascos, corazoncillos, ahulagas, donkey’s thyme and balo. The rich flora is complemented by the presence of up to 92 species of lichens.

Its proximity to populated areas and its signposted trails offer a unique opportunity to enjoy this natural environment, whilst promoting the conservation of its rich biodiversity and unique geological heritage.

And to round off the walk, you can take a dip in the crystal-clear waters at El Puertito de Güímar and tuck into the refreshments on offer at the nearby bars.
